What is legal aid?

Legal Aid can provide access to free or reduced cost legal advice in criminal and civil cases if you cannot otherwise afford an Advocate.

Legal Aid provided by the Guernsey Legal Aid Service is only available for legal matters arising in the Bailiwick of Guernsey i.e. the Islands of Guernsey, Herm, Alderney and Sark.

Legal Aid is only available for private individuals and not companies or groups of people.

The Administrator is responsible for granting Legal Aid. The Administrator is an independent statutory official appointed by the States of Guernsey and answerable to the Committee for Employment & Social Security. She has full discretion to grant or refuse Legal Aid within the terms of the scheme which
the States prescribes.

The Guernsey Legal Aid Service is the office that administers the Legal Aid schemes under the direction of the Administrator.
